The Diary of Anne Frank (1980)

Director: Boris Sagal
Writers: Anne Frank (diary) Frances Goodrich (play)

Release Date: 17 November 1980 (USA)

Having played Helen Keller in the previous year's TV remake of The Miracle Worker, Melissa Gilbert takes a stab at another inspiring young heroine from history, the brave Jewish teenager Anne Frank, who hid with her family for two years during the Nazi occupation of Holland in World War Two. Founded on an impressive pedigree, a script by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett (who penned the original play and the 1959 screen version), this also benefits from fine portrayals by Maximilian Schell and Joan Plowright as Anne's parents, anxious but indomitable.
